Old Millfun
(2023)

eng · ita

A vertical labyrinth in Shanghai, China: the Old Millfun. It is a former municipal slaughterhouse erected within the urban landscape of pre-Communist Shanghai. Today, its function has been transformed into a “commercial hub for creative industries.” Originally designed by British architects, the building opens inward onto a central atrium, where an extraordinarily complex network of ramps and vertiginous stairways defines its architectural character. The former slaughterhouse was built in 1933 by the Shanghai Municipal Council and conceived both as a slaughterhouse and as a vast refrigerated storage facility. Over the years, however, it served a variety of other purposes, including that of a pharmaceutical factory. Located in the historic Hongkou district, the Old Millfun remained abandoned for years, gradually falling into decay, as it had never undergone any restoration. In 2008, Zhao Chongxin initiated an extensive restoration project aimed at adapting the building for multidisciplinary artistic activities, which today occupy only part of its generous dimensions. The building represents an early example of the influence of British architectural design on Chinese urban settlements, at a time when it embodied an international standard of modernity. The architectural space, born from a unique design and construction process, appears as an intricate integrated machine, composed of an impressive labyrinth of spiral staircases, interlocking ramps, aerial bridges, and concrete atriums. Exploring the building proves to be both unsettling and captivating, offering a striking experience to those fortunate enough to encounter it and become immersed in the poetry of its Brutalist forms.
