The lively and vibrant city is framed from the perspective of construction sites of buildings designed by “archistars” that become the theatrical wings of an inconstant nature, unresolved bodies still bare of their skin and blood. Their regular openings define urban fragments, portions of city that can be observed with the precision of the entomologist.
related text:In-between / Stefania ZulianiThe look is frontal, relentless. The shot is clean, without bewilderment: shaped in the light and colour of air, Architecture that is made of forms with their own weight, voice, breath and mood, is, here and now, the unmistakable threshold to the city. The threshold to that city’s image which is visual perceptive construction, view and environment as well as movement, never-ending transition where principles and chance ceaselessly originate unexpected balances, where scattered, disoriented individuals meet each other (in fact, a city is “artiste du vivre ensemble” as Jean-Luc Nancy affirms), and where new visions are generated and each time have to be recognised and re-defined. They are visions that are to be framed, just like it happens when it comes to these eight photographs which punctuate Attraverso (Through), a sober story, conveniently left unfinished. For many years now, architecture has been a challenge and the dearest accomplice to Pino Musi in his mindful research. In these works of art, architecture simultaneously appears to be a detail within and the frame itself of the urban scene. It is an inmost frame, and not only because the author drives his (and our) eye towards the urban horizon and its promises, moving from the most concealed, hidden and deepest part of those architectural structures under construction which have not developed yet into their final function - be it a house, a bridge or a museum. It is because of its being a frame that architecture is not just a limiting device that encloses, defines and displays, but it is a further extension and perspective of what is enclosed, and what the frame eventually discloses to us, while enclosing it. More than a window that relates and separates its content, according to Georg Simmel in the early 1900s, the frame is parergon, actually: it is neither within nor totally outside the work of art, it is “a supplement” which, as Derrida suggests, “démonte les oppositions conceptuelles les plus rassurantes”. And it is on this blissful ambiguity, on this hybrid, hazardous and deranging character - which is the inside? Which is the outside? Which is the subject and which is the object of these images? - that feed Musi’s photographs, that he had been taking with patient care and strict discipline in March 2012, in Salerno, at the building sites of the Justice Building Complex designed by David Chipperfield, of the Maritime Terminal by Zaha Hadid and the Sports Arena by Tobia Scarpa. Through its b/w, free of indulgence or nostalgia, result of a printing ability bordering on, but never turning into, virtuosity, Musi’s photography exhibits and judges the ferroconcrete structures - now so steady and straight to confirm that architecture is still the daughter of Daedalus and his plombe line despite today’s dare-devil digital tools, and now so gathered and sinuous, so hazardous and weightless that make us believe in what Valery wrote in his work Eupalinos: buildings can sing - and, through the light, sets the spaces that there-residing shadows and iron structures define as deserted, thus returning us, at the same time and without interruption, a more real and vibrant city. In a way that is both a bet and a promise, photography put us in a position to experience the city, whereas this does not imply only the experience of seeing and recognizing the city’s intentions and forms - the garden city, the body city, the labyrinth city.... As today we are submerged by visuals, experiencing the city is already and further becoming the experience of “listening to” more than that of “gazing at”. “I listen to your heart, city,” had once stated Savinio while referring to his metaphysical Milan, and if it is true what Regis Debray has recently suggested, that our “looking at” has progressively switched to the listening mode, to a sort of “stretching out”, “aiming at” which imply movement, acceptance and crossing the borders (of edges and frames) that rule the way individuals meet each other, Attraverso is the practice of a subtle vision, of the mediation of our senses sight, hearing and even, for an acute decision, touch, and is able to establish actual connections. It relates us to the city, to its restless, ever-changing life, made of architecture and persons, of walls to tear down and to erect, of trades and new links between individuals and communities, and between nature and the many different cultures that in a city cohexist, merge and differ. Because the city, just like photography and architecture, is an in-between land, a chance and a venture to share, that like “the world, like every in-between, relates and separates men at the same time” (Hannah Arendt).
