The contemporary city appears as a stratified territory, crossed by a multiplicity of signs that continuously alter its perception. Its surfaces preserve traces of time, accidental transformations, designed interventions, and inscriptions that reveal different ways of inhabiting and interpreting space. Between involuntary marks and intentional signs, a complex relationship emerges: the traces left by matter, natural forces, and human actions affect built forms, altering their original function and generating new layers of meaning. Architecture thus becomes a deposit of memory and, at the same time, a space in constant rewriting. The city possesses its own changing grammar, composed of elements that are erased, superimposed, and recomposed over time. Photography enters this process not as a simple record of reality, but as a tool capable of revealing the tensions between form and transformation, presence and absence, order and discontinuity. In Pino Musi’s work, the investigation of urban space focuses precisely on these stratifications: on margins, expansions, and places where sign, structure, and volume meet, revealing the hidden complexity of the built landscape.
