This project focuses on the vernacular architecture that shaped the landscape around the Sarno River plain. These constructions, essential, were built with local, often rather basic materials and feature simple structures inspired by farming patterns and greatly efficient building solutions. They are rendered frontally, mostly under an even light and centrally framed. A protocol that fully conveys the dignity of true modern architecture to these stones and that reveals them in the way of a perspective etching. The images stand out for their rigor, stemming from the objectivity of the shooting protocol and from the power of the form stripped of any interpretative layer. These monolithic constructions with their walls in pietrame – a residual volcanic stone from the quarries of the nearby Vesuvius – differ mostly by slight differences on their façades – rectangular door frames alongside rounded, rather than square, windows, or else walls speckled with deep openings; but they share in common their structure and purpose. The work takes vantage of their geometries to bring them back into the realm of the visible on the rural landscape. The relief comes from the bond established between the context and the constructions: as a local cultural and historical symbol, rural architecture is actually standing as a compelling element of the territory, a genuine genius loci..
