Blind Iland
Isola cieca
(2019)

In June 2019, Pino Musi created this series of images on the island of Asinara, in Sardinia, a place where human tragedy and the wild beauty of nature have been sedimented over time. A sense of confinement and a condition of absolute freedom coexist in a contradiction that cannot be fully deciphered. Asinara remained completely “closed” to the outside world for many years. The island housed ruthless criminals in high-security prisons that punctuate the landscape like alien blocks. An untouched flora and a fauna including native breeds of extraordinary animals — horses, hares, donkeys, some of them albino and blind, the result of years of inbreeding — intersect here in a tension between innocence and brutality. Asinara is therefore a place of tragedies and complex events, but also an extraordinary natural park. The gaze opens outward, yet is sometimes abruptly forced back into a state of imposed blindness, and vice versa. Throughout the island, as elsewhere, traditional information panels are positioned along the landscape, marking the distinctive features of the vegetation encountered by visitors. Salt, wind, sun and time have caused the drawings and descriptions to fade, eventually disappearing from the reader’s sight. What remains intact are the tangible panels bearing Braille texts, which can only be read by the blind. The paradox lies precisely in this reversal: the blind become the only ones allowed to read the characteristics of the island, while those who see are confronted with an elusive matter, sometimes entirely bleached away, where writing has vanished and the landscape is no longer “described”. It becomes a metaphor for a condition of loss of coordinates, of a permanent state of disorientation.
